Dr. Holly Quinn AKA Harlequin is the Batman '66 comic version of the mainstream Batman comics character Harley Quinn.

Character Biography[]

Dr. Holly Quinn worked at the Arkham Institute where Gotham's more insane super-criminals were kept. With the assistance of her superior Dr. Andreas Overbeck she created a brain-regulator to help try and cure Arkham's more "eccentric" patients. The machine was never perfected however.

The Joker and Catwoman wound up persuading Dr. Quinn into creating a perfect version of the machine for Arkham's "Patient Pageant Night". During this event, the Joker used the Brain Regulator to make everyone laugh so hard at his stand-up comedy that he and Catwoman were able to escape. Joker and Catwoman proceed to trying to use the Machine to create an explosion of Madness which would leave all of Gotham insane so Holly sacrifices her own mind to stop it. The result leaves Holly a hysterical egomaniac, calling herself "Harlequin" she becomes intent on becoming the biggest villain in Gotham.

Trivia[]

  • Holly is one of several villains created after the Batman 1960s TV show who was added into the comics.
  • Dr. Holly Quinn first appeared in Batman '66 Digital Issue # 7, in the story "The Joker Sees Red". She becomes a main character in the storyline "The Joker's Big Show"/"Gotham Goes Ho Ho Ho"/"The Dynamic Duo & Batgirl Say Hello!" (Digital Issues #31-33) before losing her sanity and becoming Harlequin in "Night of the Harlequin" in Digital Issue #62.
  • While she is clearly based on Harley Quinn, the villain alias of "Harlequin" in DC Comics actually refers to Molly Mayne, the enemy turned wife of the original Green Lantern.
  • The character began as "Harley Quinn" in Batman: The Animated Series as a new character created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm. She later became part of the comic book continuity in similar fashion to how she was introduced in the animated series. In that original established history of the character, Dr. Harleen Quinzel was the doctor who began studying and attempted to rehabilitate the Joker. Through his own manipulations of her emotions, Joker made Dr. Quinzel fall in love with him, inspiring her to create the "Harley Quinn" persona and become his on-again, off-again moll.
