Back to the Batcave

Back to the Batcave is the 1994 tell-all book dictated by Adam West and transcribed by Jeff Rovin. The following year, Burt Ward released a tell-all of his own titled Boy Wonder: My Life in Tights.

Partial synopsis[]

In telling his story to Rovin, West corrected some of the mistaken perceptions about the show—e.g., that it was "campy" and that it ruined the character of Batman by making fun of him.

  • About the accusations of "campiness" leveled against the show, West admitted to Rovin, "I loathed the word 'camp.' It demeaned our efforts by suggesting that what we were working hard to achieve was so corny or easy or bad that anyone could do it. We just made it look that way."
  • West gave the claims that the show ruined Batman by giving them context whose details Rovin wrote into the text, and he (West) ended by telling Rovin, "We didn't ruin Batman. Quite the contrary. We saved the Caped Crusader from the one foe he couldn't overcome: dismal sales." He explained to Rovin that DC Comics was on the verge of folding the Bat-Titles after approximately a quarter of a century, but pointed out, "Our show saved the title and made it possible for a new generation..." to get to know Batman as he had once been.

West ended his dictations by admitting to Rovin, "Batman is not my property. Just my beloved concern."
